Blog Tour – Once Upon An Adventure

Welcome!

Recently, I got together with some authors to ask them a few questions.  Read on as we talk with these 4 authors just a bit.  Thank you for joining us today.

Kitty’s Book Spot! Interview with Nicki Chapelway:

1. Do you write to music?
Yes, yes I do. In fact, I find that I can’t write unless there is music playing in the background.

2. Do you make playlists of music for your books?
In a way I do, I mean I don’t do it on Spotify or anything fancy like that, but I write to movie soundtracks that have themes that make me think of my books. For instance for my novella Winter Cursed I wrote to the soundtrack Snow White and the Huntsman for the Snow White elements, Thor Dark World for the Celtic and Nordic elements, and The Legend of Tarzan for Cedric’s and Lizzie’s themes.

3. What book was your favorite as a child/teen?
I’m going to say Ella Enchanted which I loved to pieces as a preteen.

4. What genre do you hope to write someday that you have not had a chance yet?
Hmm, oh wow, that’s a tough question. I don’t think Sci-Fi counts since I’ve already started that even though I haven’t finished any books in that genre yet, so I’ll say Time Travel- that counts as a genre right? If not then either Steam Punk or Paranormal.

5. What do you hope readers take away from your story(ies)?
Mostly, I hope that my readers learn not to make the same mistakes as my characters.

6. Can you tell the readers one thing about you nobody knows?
Okay… another tough question. Give me a moment to think about this one. Something that nobody knows… hmm… okay, when I was younger in order to get through the boredom of school, I would pretend to be other people. Like I would be a secretary for some billionaire or a ranger documenting herbs or a Hobbit living in the Shire preparing for second breakfast. When I was twelve I pretended to be the Doctor’s companion- and since I like variety, I made up a different companion for each Doctor so I got to choose if I was a time traveling vet or a noble lady. That’s something I’m pretty sure I’ve never told anyone.

7. How do we find you online?  What is your favorite social media site?
Which also kind of answers the second question, cause that’s my favorite social media site.
You can also find me on Pinterest, building boards about my current WIPs, here: https://www.pinterest.com/nickichapelway/

Kitty’s Book Spot! Interview with Jes Drew:

Do you write to music?
1. I write to music as often as I can- especially during the more intense scenes.

Do you make playlists of music for your books?
2. I have unofficial playlists of music for my books, but I have yet to rise above manually finding all the different songs I want, to actually putting something together with them.

What book was your favorite as a child/teen?
3. That is a hard question since I went through so many phases with so many genres and so many favorites. But the closest to being a supreme favorite would probably be The Sherwood Ring by Elizabeth Marie Pope.

What genre do you hope to write someday that you have not had a chance yet?
4. Ooh, that’s a hard one, because I feel drawn to both the romantic comedy and the psychological suspense. I have aspects of both in most of my books, but I’ve never really just focused on them- it seems so much easier to write about spies and superheroes!

What do you hope readers take away from your story(ies)?
5. I want readers to know that they are not alone in this world and in what they are dealing with. They have God and me- though sometimes we work through our characters to show it.

Can you tell the readers one thing about you nobody knows?
6. Genuphobia is the fear of knees, your own or someone else’, and the act of kneeling.

How do find you online?  What is your favorite social media site?
7. Well, some of the cavemen next door were grunting about this thing called wifi, so I thought I’d try it out. So far, I’ve only gotten as far as Goodreads. Have to keep time for my cave painting.

Kitty’s Book Spot! Interview with C. B. Cook:

1. Do you write to music?
I don’t usually write to music, as it makes it harder for me to focus. But if there’s a lot of commotion or conversation around me, I may play some instrumental music (especially movie soundtracks) while I write to block out the other noise.

2. Do you make playlists of music for your books?
Not usually. I think that’s something I might try in the future, though!

3. What book was your favorite as a child/teen?
When I was younger, I loved going back and rereading The Chronicles of Narnia at least once a year. It’s still one of my favorite series, but I’ve gotten out of the habit of doing that. I grew up reading that series, and it’s one that I love.

4. What genre do you hope to write someday that you have not had a chance yet?
I’d love to write some kind of fantasy book or a mystery that doesn’t involve superheroes. I love to read both of those genres, and I’d really like to try my hand at writing them, too!

5. What do you hope readers take away from your story(ies)?
I hope that readers are able to learn something about truth from my books, and I also hope that they can learn that you don’t need a story to be dark to be enjoyable. Mostly, I want my books to provide some lightheartedness and cleanness that a lot of stories today, especially in the YA category, seem to be lacking.

6. Can you tell the readers one thing about you nobody knows?
I can’t think of anything that no one knows, but very few people know that I’m actually a blue belt in Tae Kwon Do!

7. How do find you online?  What is your favorite social media site?
I have a blog (The World of the Writer) and accounts on Goodreads and Pinterest! Pinterest is probably one of my favorite social media sites because I love the pictures and writing ideas I get on there.

Kitty’s Book Spot! Interview with Loretta Marchize:

1. Do you write to music?
Nope! I know a lot of authors who do, and quite honestly I’d love to, but I write in my family living room with my siblings and mom around, so it would be hard to do.

2. Do you make playlists of music for your books?
No, although occasionally I will hear a song and think ‘oh hey- this goes with so and so book!’

3. What book was your favorite as a child/teen?
Well, I still am a teen, but as a child I loved Ella Enchanted, and the classics- especially Cinderella.

4. What genre do you hope to write someday that you have not had a chance yet?
Science fiction or historical fiction!

5. What do you hope readers take away from your story(ies)?
I mostly want readers to go away from the book happy, glad that they read it. It’s an easy read, mostly just a ‘fun’ read.

6. Can you tell the readers one thing about you nobody knows?
I actually like Star Wars. I’ve never really told anyone, but I actually really love it! I know a lot of random facts about it. I make a pretense of not really knowing much about it though. Otherwise my brother would bombard me with Star Wars all day, and I don’t care for it that much.

7. How do find you online?  What is your favorite social media site?
Well, I have a blog: lorettamz.com but I’m also frequently on Goodreads! I don’t do much (any) other social media (although I do have a Wattpad account).

Thank you so much to Jes Drew, Loretta Marchize, C.B. Cook, & Nicki Chapelway for joining us on the Spot!  Thank you readers for being here with us to get to know them.

Exclusive Excerpt:

He appreciated every inch of her, including that big brain that she didn’t hesitate to use to best him whenever possible. That was some pretty sexy shit right there.

“Are you not a meat eater? Because that’s something I should know up front.” The kind of thing Wren should put in her file. Damon didn’t think that was too much to ask.

As predicted she frowned at him. Shot him one of those you’re-wasting-time looks that she’d been using on him nonstop since they met. “Are you serious right now?”

“Because I eat a lot of burgers and if that’s going to offend you, I can eat something else. I won’t like it, but I will.” Her fidgeting must be rubbing off on him because he picked up his fork then set it down again.

She leaned across the table. “How many burgers?”

Now this was a topic he could handle. Especially since she asked the question in a soft voice, as if they were sharing a secret. “Every day.”

She sat back hard in her seat again. “You do not eat a hamburger every day.”

He ignored the horror in her voice. “True. Some days I mix it up and order a cheeseburger. If I’m feeling particularly frisky I’ll have a steak sandwich.”

“That seems like an invitation to heart disease.” And she was back to shifting around. She crossed and uncrossed her arms before she grabbed for her napkin again.

He could not stop watching her. Energy buzzed off her. He found the mix of tough talk and nervous fidgeting unexpectedly hot. “You’d think, but no.”

“I’m going to pretend you’re kidding.”

“I’m not.”

She cleared her throat. “Shauna.”

They could circle back to food because she had his attention now. He refused to joke about this topic. “Your sister.”

“She’s three years older.”

He noticed she didn’t use the past tense. Shauna died ten years ago and Cate still saw her as an “is.” For Damon, that meant treading carefully. “And you are . . . ?”

“Twenty-nine.”

He knew that answer before she said but thought keeping her to facts might help her emotionally wade through the next part. He’d helped Wren with other cases and this piece—dealing with the grief—never got easier. Damon had a load of grief and guilt of his own piled on top of hers, so he got it.

He nodded to her. “Go ahead.”

“The questions you ask don’t seem that pertinent.”

“I’m going to be honest with you.” He started to lean forward when the waiter came by and dropped off their food. The smell of grilled hamburger filled his senses as he reached for his folded napkin and threw it across his lap.

She didn’t move. “That would be a good way to start.”

“Wren already gave me a file he had on you. The man is an expert at collecting information and then making Garrett put it together in a nice big, easy-to-understand breakdown of what happened and when.”

For a few seconds she sat there, quiet, as her gaze moved over his face, studying him. “Then why are we here doing the get-to-know-you thing?”

He popped a french fry in his mouth. “I’m hungry. That happens a lot. The need-to-eat thing. So, you’ll need to get used to it.”

EXCERPT:

The rain stopped, and the wind outside had settled, leaving an uncomfortable silence in its wake. I didn’t have a problem with the quiet. I liked it, in fact. But this was something a little different. This was uncomfortable. The kind of stillness that came from forced proximity to someone or something that made your skin itch and your stomach roil. The kind of hush that usually set in right before a devastating storm or a natural disaster.

He did this sometimes. Just sat across from me and stared. He usually wouldn’t even say anything. I didn’t think he expected me to say anything, either. He just looked. Sometimes it lasted a few minutes, just long enough to send that chill skittering up and down my spine. Other times it would go on for hours. He’d blink and breathe and fidget, but his eyes…those remained locked on me, his unhealthy mix of sadness and lust and greed and anger crushing me to the point of breathlessness.

We were at it again, and I was just about out of patience. It was one thing to have been ripped away from my home, from my life, by that madwoman, Cora Anderson. It was another to have her poke and prod and use me as a science experiment. She’d altered my mind. Made me forget most of my life before the day I woke up a prisoner on the floor of her cold, dank cell. Those things were all bad, but having been “rescued” by this bastard and forced to stay by his side at all times? That was an entirely new level of torture.

“You’re thinking about him again, aren’t you?” His tone was acidic and his jaw tight. He had a temper, this guy. I’d seen it multiple times. He’d never done anything more than scream at me, but it was only a matter of time with people like this. I wasn’t sure how I knew that, but I felt it in my bones. Maybe I’d known someone like him at home. Maybe it was just intuition.

“Yes,” was all I replied. I found that simple, one-word responses went over the best. Or, more accurately, the worst. When I said too little, he grew agitated. He wanted me to talk to him, yet the things that came out of my mouth weren’t ever what he wanted to hear. I didn’t act like he’d hoped I would, didn’t say the things he longed to hear. Some days he was determined to change me. Others, he was rabid, blaming me for not behaving like myself and demanding that I wake up.

Forget that I had no idea who I was.

“While it’s not okay, I understand.” He offered me a smile—a small, tentative twitch of his lips and gentle shrug of his shoulders. He was making an effort to be kinder today, going out of his way to speak softer and move slower.

That made me even angrier.

“You understand? Then my life is complete. All I’ve ever wanted was the understanding of a serial killer.” Even if I hadn’t been thinking about…someone else, I would have lied. The fact that I wasn’t focused on him, and him alone, drove Dylan—my savior, my captor—crazy. But the truth was, I was thinking of him. That other him. How could I not? Even if I didn’t find myself missing him every moment of every day in an almost physical way, I wouldn’t be able to put him out of my mind because he was technically sitting here across from me.

My world has turned into a house of cards, where one wrong move can send it all crashing down…and us with it.

Eve:

Finally at a prestigious university—and on the path to living my dreams—I’ve left the darkness of the Blue Houses behind. Still, a whole new host of problems await me.

Vincent is here.

Reckoning (Vincent and Eve #2)Reckoning by Jessica Ruben
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Eve was enjoying her time as a Freshman at Columbia University. She earned her scholarship here. The future as a lawyer is her dream, and she is almost there.

Vincent has no idea that Eve is going to turn up where he is finishing school. He is wrapped up in several things at the moment. All things he does not want to taint Eve with. How to have her and not mix those worlds?

Their love is very sexy and highly emotional. This story is high with the heat and very heartfelt. As the sparks fly in many directions, Vincent stresses out trying to keep his worlds apart so they do not collide. I am so excited for the conclusion and hope the author hurries!

This pair has the banter and the sparks flying from the first moment. The attraction is mutual. Very sexy and fun book where I even wished for a sequel. You are not going to want to miss this.
