He was my first love…
I wanted him to follow his dreams. I wanted him to escape the life he hated. I thought I was doing the right thing by not telling him how I truly felt. Until it was too late, and my silence turned into my biggest regret.
Twelve years ago, Shane Owings died, taking my heart with him. I was left devastated and broken hearted. Time didn’t heal, as the years went on I only missed him more.

She was my best friend… the only woman I ever loved.
When I ran off to join the Army, I left behind everything I had ever loved. I thought I was doing the right thing, but my good intentions quickly turned into my biggest regret.
Every year on the anniversary of Shane’s death I watched as Lillian Nelson visited Shane’s grave and spilled her secrets to a dead man. Each year I hoped she wouldn’t be back, that her heart would finally heal and she would move on. But year after year she was back. So many times I wanted to reach out and comfort the beautiful woman, but I knew she would never forgive me. It was my fault Shane was dead.

WHEN A COWBOY MEETS AN HEIRESS…

Cash Hardeman thinks he’ll have all the time in the world to find the right woman…until he discovers he might lose the family ranch if he’s not married by his 30th birthday. So when Boston beauty Annelise blows into town on her Harley, Cash can’t help wondering if she’s the sexy, leather-clad answer to all his problems.

Giving her bodyguards and the paparazzi the slip, heiress Annelise Montjoy comes to Maverick Junction on a mission to help her ailing grandfather. But keeping her identity hidden in the small Texas town is harder than she expected—especially around a tempting cowboy like Cash. He’s the kind of man who makes her want to spill all her secrets. Soon Annelise starts to wonder if she’s finally found the man who can love her for herself rather than her money. But will the secrets they both keep ruin their plans to ride off into the sunset together?

Somebody Like You (Maverick Junction, #1)Somebody Like You by Lynnette Austin
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Annelise knew there was something she could do to help her failing grandfather’s health. She would just have to figure it out. What she didn’t expect, but was coming to joy, was learning to be on her own.

Cash hired Annie because he wanted to get to know her, and they needed the help. He had no idea she would work so hard. He had no idea who she really was. When the secrets of their pasts rise to the surface, will there be anything left to salvage?

Gotta tell you, this book is a seriously slow burn. Hotter in part than a Texas sunset, and just as potent. I appreciated the way the author let us taste this story without overdoing it on the flavors, however. I can honestly say I cannot wait to sample the next book in the Maverick Junction series!

NEAREST THING TO HEAVEN
Maverick Junction #2

THE COWBOY AND THE CITY GIRL

Sophie London hates Texas. The longhorns freak her out and the wide-open spaces are more unnerving than a Chicago alleyway at night. But Sophie wouldn’t miss her cousin’s wedding for the world—even if it means returning to Maverick Junction . . . and to the dangerously irresistible Ty Rawlins.

A single father of rambunctious triplet boys, Ty knows trouble when he sees it—and Sophie’s got it written all over her. Yet he’s never been able to stop thinking about her, after their one brief meeting. Maybe fate is giving him a second chance. But if Ty wants Sophie to swap her stilettos for cowgirl boots, they’ll each have to face the past—together.

Ty Rawlins has posted a no trespassing sign. My guess is he’s still in love with his dead wife.”

There is that possibility.”

Yes, there is.” Sophie swung open the door and marched out, straight into Ty.

He put his hands on her arms to steady her.

Sorry,” she mumbled.

Don’t be. My fault. I wasn’t watching where I was going.”

Ask the girl to dance, Ty.” Annelise stood behind them in the narrow hallway.

I—” He raised his hands.

That’s okay.” Sophie moved to skirt around him.

No.” He reached out, caught her hand. The jolt was instantaneous, and she knew he felt it, too, when he momentarily broke contact.

It’s all right. I don’t need to be entertained.” She heard the snap of temper in her voice but couldn’t control it.

Understood.” Ty nodded toward the jukebox. “But here’s the thing. Cash fed the machine enough coins to fill a good-size swimming pool. All those quarters. All that music. Why waste it?”

He held out a hand; heat flooded her face.

No way to avoid it. If she refused, she’d come off as a prickly snob. He had to think the worst of her anyway. Whatever social graces her mother’d drummed into her seemed to have flown out the window.

She had no idea why he’d want to dance with an idiot, but who was she to deny him that dubious honor?

In that case, I’d love to.” She smiled, took his hand, and they walked together to the small center square reserved for dancing. She refused to so much as look at her cousin. Refused, for that matter, to meet any of the eyes in the restaurant watching them speculatively.

A slow number came on and Ty turned her to him, put his other arm around her waist, and drew her in.

“‘The Keeper of the Stars,’” he said quietly. “Quite a song.”

Her heart hammered as Ty very skillfully swept her along to the music. It was different from any dance she’d ever experienced. Night and day from the one she’d shared with Brawley. He’d been fun. Ty? Intense was the only word she could come up with to define the aura surrounding him.

Totally unfamiliar with country songs, she listened to the words over the beating of her heart. “It was no accident me finding you…” Her temperature spiked ten degrees. He was right. The words were captivating. Intense, just like him. And, oh, so romantic.

His hand holding hers was callused and strong, the one at her waist firm. Hot.

Ty did not, in any way, make her think brotherly thoughts. Instead, heat pooled low. Yearnings stirred. Thoughts and desires she’d doubted she’d ever feel.

The man was dangerous. She’d do well to remember that. But for now, she’d simply enjoy the moment. The dance drifted into a second, then a third. Sophie vaguely registered others on the dance floor with them, smiled when Annelise and Cash brushed past.

Ty stood over a foot taller than her five-three, and her head rested on the strapping cowboy’s chest. She heard the steady beating of his heart and surprised herself by wishing the song could go on forever.

She was deathly afraid she wouldn’t say no if this man wanted to park his cowboy boots beneath her bed. For one night, of course.

Sophie?” Ty’s voice whispered against her ear.

Hmmm?”

The music’s stopped.”

Nearest Thing to Heaven (Maverick Junction, #2)Nearest Thing to Heaven by Lynnette Austin
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is book #2, in the Maverick Junction series. This book can be read as a standalone novel. For reader enjoyment and understanding, I recommend reading this great series in order.

Ty has a lot on his plate. His triplet sons were left without a mom when his wife died. Between that and his ranch, he does not get to change the lonely life he leads. Meeting Sophie makes him nervous. He knows he wants her, but he knows what wanting her means. He also knows what losing someone feels like.

Sophie is completely out of her element in Texas. Chicago, where she calls home is more her speed. She loves city life. She does not understand cows. No one can explain the sudden electricity between her and Ty. Nor does she want to do anything about it. Except she does….

This series gets hotter and better with each book! Another slow burn, this story has you pining and squirming with the sparks that are flying. I really enjoy the characters and really hope that I get a chance to read the next books in this amazingly hot series.

Vintage Romance

In 1944, women were thought to be the weaker sex. Divorce was unheard of—a woman’s place was in the home, obeying her spouse and raising their children. After a miscarriage, Calvin Barnes blamed his wife Sarah for being too weak to carry out her duties. His violent, drunken rampages turned deadly.

Sarah puts the pain and guilt of her past behind her until her sister Carol asks for help with a neighbor who is desperate to escape her husband’s abuse, with the added danger of a standing hitman contract should anything happen to him. Synopsis:

Opera gets magical!

The Bel Homme Quartet saga continues in Book #2 with this mystical standalone story…

British member Jamie Stratton joined the world famous pop-opera singing group called “Bel Homme” for one reason only: money. It’s a year later now, and he’s rolling in it. But Jamie also possesses a spiritual side he can’t deny. He was raised by his gran at the most legendary place on earth: Stonehenge. She manages the gift shop there, and Jamie grew up in the flat over the store. His grandmother is an eccentric old bird who reads her Tarot cards and predicts true love is coming into Jamie’s life.

Jessica Evans is an American psychic medium from Illinois who’s always believed in astral protection—but then she’s assaulted by a man who does devastating harm to her family. While she lies near death in a coma, she dreams of a stranger who is her destiny. When she finally wakes up and needs a safe place to heal, a hometown tie to the American member of Bel Homme gives her access to the group’s secure compound in Royal Tunbridge Wells, England.

That’s when Fate steps in and brings Jamie and Jessie together. But in the midst of their timeless romance, Jamie must deal with a crisis involving his grandmother while Jessie is once again confronted by her brutal attacker—and Jamie is the only one who can save her.

Love or money: which would you choose? It’s Jamie’s turn to decide.

Excerpt:

His first sight of her was her luscious bottom staring him in the face. Her knickers had ridden up on her round left cheek, exposing a mole that blinded him like a sunburst. He grabbed the doorjamb as his eyesight dimmed and wavered, mimicking the onset of an instant migraine. Everything narrowed down to that tiny spot on her arse, and he thought he might black out from the vision of the thing. It was a sexy floater in his eye, and he waited for the lights to come bursting out its center and the sharp pain to shoot through his cranium. “Fucking hell,” he heaved out. At the sound of his voice, the blonde spun around, gasped, then shrieked when she started to fall off the step stool. Flinging his bag away, Jamie lunged and caught her around her hips.

Don’t touch me!” she screamed, then lifted the frying pan and smacked him soundly on top of his head.

Ugh. Holy shit,” he bit out while they both went tumbling to the floor. He hit the hard surface first, blocking her fall but not his own. He clutched her to him, his nose now pressed between her plump breasts, which were swaying freely without a bra on under her thin cami-top. His glasses lay crooked on his nose as he opened an eye and stared into one of her erect nipples. “What in bloody hell are you doing?” he asked into it, still holding on to her for dear life.

Let go of me,” she yelled and rapped him in the head again.

Oh, Gawd,” Jamie moaned out. He released her and watched two of her crab-crawl away until her back slammed up against the cupboard. “Are you bloomin’ bonkers?” he got out, sliding back himself until he butted up against the opposite wall. There was a major roll of real pain shooting through his skull now.

Sitting across from each other, they gasped for air, their spastic breathing mingling in the space between them.

Jamie stopped rubbing his head and blinked her face into focus.

She loosened her grip on the frying pan as she studied his.

It’s you,” they said together.

My First Romance Novel

The first romance novel I ever read was A Knight In Shining Armor by Jude Devereaux. I remember my friend, Robin, calling me and saying “You have to read this book.” She wasn’t an easy sell, and she’d never read a romance before, either, so I figured I should give it a try. Well…wow. Time-travel, a moody/endearing hero, a spunky heroine with a broken heart, and many twists and turns is the perfect formula to get me hooked.

I never looked back.

A well-written book in the romance genre—and any sub-genre it may include—is the best type of book of all. Prickly sorts who look down their noses at them don’t deserve our time and effort to debate with them what they’re missing.

Other authors who carried me on my reading journey back then were Sandra Brown, (I really wish she hadn’t abandoned mainstream romance for romantic suspense.) Sharon & Tom Curtis, LaVyrle Spencer, Sandra Canfield, and Judith McNaught. They were great writers.

My personal opinion is that women who read romance are special people who are passionate, smart, witty, sensual, and naturally sexy. They may be outgoing or shy, but they’re always involved with life and possess a vibrancy in their nature that keeps them young and relevant.

Romance readers are a curious breed, too, so I imagine most of us will read just about anything outside romance as well. We’re not snobs like those who only go for academic works, who will never know what they’re missing. Those of us who love romantic stories, however, are nosy folks who don’t want to miss anything!

I’ll always be grateful to Jude Devereaux’s Nicholas Stafford for being my first.

Synopsis:

Senior Kelsey Quinn loses it all when her dad relocates the family to Hillside Texas, population Hick. She’ll do whatever it takes to return to the good life, even if it’s just for one night of dancing at a gala with the boyfriend she left behind. She trades her designer dresses for an apron to work as a dishwasher in a redneck diner. But she doesn’t plan on six feet of pure Texan, Austin McCoy entering her life. He teaches her to love the farm life she’s been forced into, but will he convince her that it’s the farm boy that goes with that life that she really wants?

Excerpt #3:

Emily and Lizzie laughed about Stephen Hartwell totaling his BMW just one month after he got it. Katie filled her in on the latest shopping trip and showed off her three-hundred-dollar Cole Hahn sandals. Kelsey nudged her scuffed Kate Spade heels under the coffee table and laughed in all the appropriate places. But after having been away from that life, it seemed outrageous that they’d laugh over crashing a car. She’d been working her ass off to pay for her wreck. She couldn’t blame them, though; she’d been just like them—probably worse.

When the conversation lulled, Kelsey look at her friends and said, “It’s so good to be back. I’ve missed you guys so much.”

Zoe said, “Welcome back to the simple life.”

They all laughed and Kelsey added, “I’m going to soak in every bit, before I have to return to Hickville.”

Lizzie smiled. “Speaking of Hickville—we have a surprise for you.” She looked around the room. “Girls, I think it’s time.”

Zoe pointed to Kelsey. “Don’t move. I’ll be right back.”

She ran upstairs and came back with a large purple gift bag. She set it in front of Kelsey and said, “This is an homage to your life in Texas.”

Katie reached into the bag, pulled out a hot pink cowboy hat with a tiara glued to the crown, and placed it on Kelsey’s head. Next, she handed her an oversized T-shirt with a picture of the front of a diner painted on it. Early Bird Café was painted in the window and above the picture was printed Trailer Trash Palace. The girls laughed wildly and insisted she wear it. She pulled it over her blouse and tried not to feel guilty for making fun of the café. The next item was a sash with the words Trailer Trash Queen spelled out in sparkly silver letters.

She laughed with them and told them about T-bone and Sandy. Only she didn’t explain how T-bone always made her a hot lunch, or how Sandy worked extra shifts so Jenny could spend more time with her kids. Instead, she mimicked Sandy’s drawn-out twang and the way T-bone scrunched his face when he was chopping vegetables.

Oh, and you guys have got to hear about Homecoming. They wear these ridiculous mums, they’re huge. Like, they cover the whole chest.”

Blog on Music

Like Pavlov’s dogs, I believe our creativity can be triggered by stimulus. For me that’s music. I couldn’t imagine writing without it. But I don’t write listening to random songs. I make a playlist to reflect the personality of each story.

While writing my Hickville Series, I listened to country music. I love country music. A country song is a complete story in about four minutes—talk about flash fiction. In four minutes those songs can make us laugh, cry, remember the good times and bad, they make us feel romance, and the pain of a love lost—sometimes in the same verse. And nothing says small town Texas like twin fiddles and a steel guitar. But it’s more than that.

If I’m having difficulty expressing the mood of a scene, I’ll play music to reflect that mood. Sometimes I’ll play songs that express aspects of my character’s personality. Taylor Swift was on a continuous loop while I wrote parts of Horseplay. (Releasing March 1)

Music also helps me plug into emotions. If I’m in a dance around the house kind of mood, it’s hard to write a gut wrenching tear jerking scene. The right song can take me there.

In the beginning of Welcome To Hickville High, Kelsey is an angry girl. I looked for music with an attitude. Miranda Lambert, Casey Musgrave, and Little Big Town have some great attitude songs. When Kelsey’s family stumbles upon the Early Bird Café, she scoffs at the high school sports newspaper clippings plastered on the walls. When I wrote that scene I listened to Everybody Dies Famous in a Small Town. Later, when she learns to love the town, I listened to Kenny Chesney’s The Boys of Fall. That song is probably the best example of a smalls town’s passion for Friday night lights I’ve heard. You can feel small town pride in the picture he paints. I listened to it when I wrote football scenes too. If I had to name a theme song for Welcome To Hickville High, it would be You Belong With Me by Taylor Swift. I love the idea of the best friend becoming the boyfriend. Spoilers.

I probably spend way too much time researching the perfect music. But when I get it right, it’s fantastic. My current work in in progress is a paranormal romance. My heroine is a fairy, so of course, I had to have the perfect Celtic music. In the beginning I listened to Scottish folk songs but as I grew to know my characters and the story, I had to find a little different sound. I knew I’d found the perfect music when I heard it in my head one night before sleep. That night I dreamt I was in the story. I walked in that world and I talked with my characters. It was awesome!

This book is the beginning of a new series, DELOS. This means Delos Home School Charities, for the purpose of this book, anyway. It is a part of a large corporation that wanted to give back.

It has Lia Cassidy, after a horrific injury and attack. She has her scars and seems to offend those who see her. This makes her want to find a place far away to settle for a while to make plans for the future. She also wants to work with kids. She is hired to manage the school down in Costa Rica. While there, she and two other teachers help a woman escape the clutches of a known drug dealer.

While under attack, Lia must run for her life and stay alive long enough for help to arrive and get her out of there. Thanks to her military training – she manages to hide just enough. Can she trust who comes to rescue her?

This is a short story leading us into the next installment in the series, Nowhere to Hide. Like all of the authors books, this story is fast paced and very compelling. Edge of your seat action, and personally, I cannot wait to read the next book.
